Why do I have to provide my home address to Companies House?
To enhance corporate transparency and combat economic crime, the UK mandates that companies disclose details about their business operations and individuals responsible for setting up, managing, and controlling these enterprises. When registering a company in the UK, comprehensive information on directors, shareholders, and Persons with Significant Control (PSCs) must be provided.
With the exception of residential addresses (unless used as a registered office or service address) and the day of birth, all disclosed information is included in the UK register of companies, which is publicly accessible. This register can be freely searched online through the Companies House Service.
When you become a director or PSC, you must provide two addresses during company setup: your usual residential address and a service address. While you can use the same address for both, details of your service address will be publicly accessible. Your home address will be kept confidential on a private register, except if it is used as a service address or registered office.
Companies House shares home address details only with credit reference agencies and specific public authorities like the police, under stringent conditions and as required by law. In exceptional circumstances, there may be avenues to prevent Companies House from disclosing your home address to credit reference agencies, which we elaborate on below.
How to tell Companies House when you move house
Updating your registered details with Companies House is straightforward and typically free, except for changing your company name. Changes are usually reflected on public records within approximately 24 hours after notifying Companies House.

Change a director’s home address
To update a company director’s home address, complete form CH01 ‘Change of director’s details’ and submit it to Companies House within 14 days of the change. The quickest and easiest method is via our Online Company Manager. Have these details ready:
- Company Registration Number (CRN)
- Full company name
- Month and year of director’s birth
- Director’s full name
- Date of change of home address
- New residential address, including postcode
- New service address
This form is also required for changes to a director’s name, service address, country/state of residence, nationality, or business occupation.
Change a PSC’s home address
To change the home address of a Person with Significant Control (PSC), you must complete form PSC04, titled ‘Change of details of individual person with significant control (PSC)’. This form should be submitted to Companies House online within 28 days of the address change. The required details include:
- Company Registration Number (CRN)
- Full company name
- Month and year of PSC’s birth
- Date of the change of home address
- New residential address, including postcode
- New service address
- Date on which the address update was made on the company’s PSC register
- If applicable, declare whether the individual PSC is exempt from disclosing their home address to credit reference agencies, or has applied for exemption.

Companies House exemption from disclosing the home address
If your home address is used as your company’s registered office, Companies House cannot remove it from the company register. However, directors and PSCs can request to remove their home address details (when used as a service address) from the public record and/or withhold this information from credit reference agencies under certain circumstances. Each exemption requires a separate application and payment of a fee.
To request removal of your home address from public record, download form SR01 from the Companies House website. Complete the form and send it to Companies House along with a cheque or postal order for £30.
If you are at risk of violence or intimidation due to your company’s activities, you can apply to Companies House to withhold your address from credit reference agencies. You will need to provide supporting evidence, such as a police incident number, documentary evidence of a threat or attack, evidence of potential disruption or targeting, or proof of employment with an organization like the Secret Intelligence Service.
